Why buy vintage bricks?

lego-3 brick.jpg

Firstly, I would always recommend you buy a vintage brick set because you like it, whether it is just for the joy of building it or the desire to put it on display - they make great conversation starters!

However, they increasingly have great investment potential too. Lego has outperformed most other forms of investment, including Gold in the last 10 years!  There are now dedicated websites that specialise in tracking current and future values. I have included a link below to my favourite, which is BrickEconomy. It enables you to add your Lego collection and see its future value.

Values are affected by the rarity and condition of a set. If it’s still sealed this is the best scenario, but even used they can still provide a decent return on your investment.  Here’s a taster of some of the returns:

117 Locomotive without motor would have cost you £2.96 in 1967. Its current value today sealed is £496!
106 LEGO UNICEF Van was a promotional set released in 1985. It’s current value sealed is a whopping £6,924! Even used this set is worth between £1220 to £2765 on the secondhand market.
1589 LEGO Main Street would have cost you £10.25 in 1978. A sealed set will cost you £816 and a used set can be bought for around £185.
